SLDs (Style Level Descriptors)

Finance Maps uses an XML document known as a Style Level Descriptor (SLD) to instruct Mapserver how to render the map so that different countries get painted different colours depending upon how their financial markets are doing at that point in time. A new XML document is rendered and passed onto mapserver for each request made by your web browser.

Information regarding SLDs and how to use them as part of a WMS request can be found in the SLD How-to guide of the MapServer website.

More fascinating information can be culled from the OpenGIS specification. If you're interested in reading lots of boring, technical documents - you'll love the OpenGIS website. It's great for insomniacs and mapping fiends alike.
